What Does CBG Feel Like? Learn About This Minor Cannabinoid

Cannabis customers at convention.

Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of many minor cannabinoids found in cannabis, and one that’s earned its moment in the spotlight. Discover what this cannabinoid is all about — what we know about this cannabinoid’s science, what CBG feels like, and how to choose great CBG products.

Understanding CBG

Discovered in 1964, Cannabigerol (CBG) plays quite a unique role in cannabis. It’s the very first cannabinoid to take shape in young cannabis plants. The acidic form of this cannabinoid, CBGA, converts into other acidic forms of cannabinoids we know and love, like THCA and CBDA. (The acidic forms are naturally occurring in the plant, and they convert into “active” forms once they’re exposed to heat. So when you light up, that CBGA drops the A and becomes CBG. And as you might guess, THCA and CBDA become THC and CBD when heated as well.)

Despite being the primary building block of the plant, CBG is not as abundant as THC or as commonplace as CBD once the plant has matured. CBG typically comprises less than 1% of the total active cannabinoid (TAC) content of a mature plant.

How does the CBG cannabinoid feel?

CBG is not intoxicating on its own like THC. However, there is evidence that CBG may contribute to the entourage effect (how your experience varies when cannabinoids and terpenes come together in different combinations). Some consumers report feeling more alert and focused after consuming CBG, while others note a feeling of relaxation or tiredness. CBG’s potential to enhance the effects of CBD could lead to a more well-rounded and satisfying experience for some consumers.

CBG vs. CBD

Unlike THC, CBG and CBD take a different path in interacting with your body, and they won’t get you high. You may see them called “non-psychoactive,” though that’s technically not accurate because they do have an effect on your brain — they just aren’t intoxicating effects. So, it would be more accurate to say these cannabinoids are non-intoxicating but do carry other psychoactive effects.

Both cannabinoids interact with various receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system but have distinct mechanisms of action. CBG, acting as a partial agonist to CB1 and CB2 receptors, results in a more subtle effect, while CBD is believed to work by inhibiting the breakdown of endocannabinoids and allowing for a less significant influence on the body.

CBG vs. THC

CBG and THC are quite different. THC is the compound responsible for the euphoric “high” associated with cannabis. In contrast, the CBG cannabinoid does not induce an intoxicating experience.

Some research suggests that CBG may modulate or tamper with the effects of cannabis. A 2022 study found that CBG could shape the overall experience of THC, potentially enhancing it through the entourage effect.

It’s important to note, however, that research on the specific interactions between CBG and THC is an evolving field. Further studies are needed to fully understand the dynamics of their combined effects.
