When Infused Pre-Rolls Are Right for the Moment

Although all pre-rolls sold at licensed dispensaries have THC, one type of pre-roll in particular makes for especially powerful liftoff. Infused pre-rolls are considerably higher in THC content than their non-infused counterparts, making them an excellent choice for folks in search of a potent experience. Learn what makes a pre-roll infused, who these cannabis products are good for, and which brands are doing it best.

What are infused pre-rolls?
Infused pre-rolls are pre-rolls that, alongside the usual ground flower, are packed with cannabis concentrates. Sometimes, the concentrate is applied to the outside of the pre-roll.
In terms of how they’re made, the only difference between an infused pre-roll and a regular pre-roll is the added concentrates. As potency goes, though, there’s another important difference: Infused pre-rolls contain much more THC than their non-infused counterparts.
Cannabis flower typically ranges from 15% to 30% in THC content, whereas concentrates contain anywhere from 60% to 90% or more THC content. Add concentrates to the flower in a pre-roll, and that 15% to 30% THC content often approaches or exceeds 40%. That’s considerably more potent than a pre-roll containing solely ground flower.
What types of concentrates are added to infused pre-rolls?
Several of the concentrates that you can buy at a licensed dispensary in New York are also the shining stars of infused pre-rolls. Here are the basics you should know about these concentrates.
Kief
Kief-infused pre-rolls add this concentrate to joints, either by coating the outside of the pre-roll or adding to flower before rolling up.
Where does kief come from? When you grind flower, its trichomes — which are packed with the cannabinoids and terpenes that shape the cannabis experience — fall off. Loose trichomes that accumulate at the base of your grinder are collectively known as the concentrate “kief,” which has around 50% to 80% THC content.
When you buy kief at a dispensary, it’s typically made by dry sifting flower through a series of mesh screens. It’s a solventless concentrate, which means no chemical medium was used to make it.
Hash
The history of hashish, also known as hash, spans millennia. This concentrate, which often contains 40% to 60% THC, is the end product of pressing kief into bricks. Though ancient, hash is today produced via the modern technology of ice water agitation, and the end product is commonly known as bubble hash.
Hash-infused pre-rolls typically add this concentrate to the flower while rolling up.
Distillate
Distillate contains only a single cannabinoid, typically THC, with no other minor cannabinoids, trichomes, or other compounds from cannabis. To make it, flower soaks in a medium like ethanol, and THC is isolated from that mixture. The result is an extract that’s highly potent — as much as 90% pure THC — and is used to add a THC boost to products like pre-rolls. Distillate is either added to flower or applied to the outside of the joint.
Live resin
Live resin is a full-spectrum extract made from fresh-frozen flower. This concentrate is known for preserving all the cannabinoids and terpenes from its source strain, allowing for strain-specific extracts. Like in this Candy Jack infused pre-roll from Florist Farms, this specific strain’s flower is infused with its own live resin extract, amplifying the aromas, flavors, and experience of that particular strain.
Crumble
To create the extract known as crumble, cannabis flower is exposed to hydrocarbons such as butane. The resulting cannabis extract is put through a process that dries it out and creates its unique crumbly texture. It’s this texture that makes crumble easy to distribute throughout flower before rolling. Crumble’s potency is typically 90% THC or greater, adding a nice boost to pre-roll’s THC content.
Diamonds
In some cases, purging cannabis flower of a solvent used to produce oil leaves behind crystals of THCA (the precursor to THC). These crystals are called diamonds, and they’re 99.9% THC — exceptionally potent. Diamonds are highly coveted for their high THC content, and in pre-rolls, they’re distributed in the flower throughout the joint.
Are infused pre-rolls stronger than regular pre-rolls?
You bet. The concentrates added to pre-rolls add a significant amount of THC to regular flower. Expect infused pre-rolls to contain anywhere from 30% to 55% THC. Check the label on the product you’re buying to confirm the THC content per pre-roll.
Who are infused pre-rolls good for?
Infused pre-rolls are worth trying if you enjoy inhaling cannabis, but pre-rolls aren’t as effective as they used to be to achieve your desired effects. For example, if your tolerance built up over time as you’ve made pre-rolls part of your everyday routine, infused pre-rolls might be how you elevate your experience.
You might also like infused pre-rolls if you’ve been embracing vapes or concentrates for a while but still want to enjoy flower. And if you’re spending time with loved ones who are as experienced with cannabis as you are, then multi-packs of infused pre-rolls are perfect for the moment.
Since infused pre-rolls are stronger than regular pre-rolls, those newer to cannabis are best off sticking to regular pre-rolls. And first-timers or those early in their journey have more options than pre-rolls and cannabis flower (though low-THC flower is always beginner-friendly). For example, dosing edibles so that you take a microdose or starter dose may get you exactly where you want to go.
