What You Can Expect When You Try Trainwreck

Take a trip back in time with us, exploring the lore and mystery of Trainwreck.

Is the Trainwreck strain potent?

Yes and no. Trainwreck was bred, in part, to have a higher THC content than its predecessors, being a first-generation result of breeding three landrace cannabis strains. So, yes, reports claim the strain has high THC levels and is potent.

However, according to the shopping standards you’ll encounter today, 18% THC potency is considered moderate. Most phenotypes of Trainwreck and Trainwreck-inspired strains share this moderate potency level. Just in case, we recommend that you start low and go slow if you’re new to consuming cannabis.

Why is Trainwreck considered legendary?

Trainwreck cannabis was born decades ago, as far back as the ‘80s or ‘70s, and traveled through time to be played with by the first “legit,” or licensed, cannabis breeders in the 90s. The cultivars (AKA strains) produced during this time made way for the strains we enjoy today. We’ll talk more about that later. Considering its origins and how it predates legal cannabis in the United States, it’s not surprising that Trainwreck’s origins became a thing of legend.

Why is Trainwreck so mysterious?

Trainwreck is so mysterious because the folks who initially generated the cross back in the day did so without legal permission. Just like other fabled strains like Acapulco Gold, Trainwreck was the lovechild of three landrace cultivars carefully collected by hand around the world. Whoever collected the samples brought them back to Northern California and got to work breeding plants. After doing so successfully, other permissionless hobbyists requested clones and seeds, conducting their genetic experimentation with the za.

Trainwreck essentials: What you need to know before you try

What genetics makeup Trainwreck cannabis?

As you’ve just learned, Trainwreck was bred from a cross between a Mexican landrace sativa and a Thai landrace sativa, with an Afghani landrace indica. The lineage is well-traveled. Being a cross of indicas and sativas, we may have previously called Trainwreck a hybrid. However, indica and sativa are biological differences in cannabis plants. Contrary to popular belief, this biological difference doesn’t necessarily have the effectual impact that we once thought.

What’s a landrace strain?

Cannabis has grown natively all over the world before humans cared to make it illegal. Certain regions of the globe were naturally more favorable to producing weed which was especially delightful to the local humans who figured out how to use it. For example, soil, precipitation, shade, light, and soil conditions around Oaxaca yielded the beautiful Mexican landrace sativa used partly to breed Trainwreck and other legendary forefather cultivars.

Why should you try the Trainwreck cultivar?

Try Trainwreck because it’s something special and hard to find. These first-generation strains are not commonly available in today’s legal cannabis shops because of how weed genetics as a whole has played out over time. Here’s the reality of the situation: if you can get your hands on Trainwreck flower, the growers producing it for you are highly passionate and intentional about growing weed, that is, simply put, the best it can possibly be.

What Trainwreck products can you buy in New York City?

We’re proud to carry the Trainwreck flower from Alchemy Pure at The Travel Agency. This particular product is worth procuring for yourself because, aside from being extremely rare, it’s also grown outdoors, or “sun grown” — as the original breeders intended. The combination of strain and cultivation methods makes this product a can’t-miss.

A just-as-exciting product with Trainwreck lineage, Pineapple Trainwreck vapes from WaaHoo, crosses this strain with the similarly iconic, but not nearly as rare, Pineapple Express.

Trainwreck shopping tips

Support your community’s cannabis economy with these shopping tips:

Shop legal: Look for the NYS Dispensary seal displayed outside of legal pot shops in the city. You can scan the seal’s QR code to cross-reference the names of licensed shops hosting the signage.

Look for lab tests: Every cannabis product in a legal dispensary will also have an NYS seal and a QR code which leads to the lab test results, or certificate of analysis, of your product’s batch. Testing is necessary to check products for cannabinoid content, terpene content, and things you don’t want in your cannabis.
