NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — More than two weeks after the state’s first recreational marijuana dispensary opened, a second one is slated to debut in Manhattan next month.
The new store, called the “The Travel Agency: A Cannabis Store,” will be located at 835 Broadway in Union Square, on the corner of Broadway and East 13th Street, near the Union Square subway station.
It will have a soft opening on Feb 13., using a facility with an entrance at 62 East 13th St. while the main 5,000-square-foot space is being built out.
The store will only sell products cultivated in New York state with a focus on women and BIPOC-owned businesses.
Fifty-one percent of the proceeds will go to the Doe Fund, which provides housing, career training and counseling to marginalized populations in New York City.
The dispensary will be open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.
New York state’s first legal dispensary for recreational cannabis opened on Dec. 28 to adults 21 and older at Housing Works Cannabis Company at 750 Broadway, at E. 8th Street in Greenwich Village. It came nearly two years after the state legalized recreational use of cannabis for adults in March 2021.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that Housing Works, a minority-controlled nonprofit that serves people with HIV and AIDS, as well as homeless people and the formerly incarcerated, would be the first of 36 recently licensed dispensaries to begin selling cannabis to the public.
New York is anticipated to grant another 139 licenses in the coming months, with approximately 900 applications awaiting a decision.
The state is expected to become one of the most lucrative legal pot markets in the U.S.
