Can You Travel With Cannabis? Where You Can (And Can’t) Go

Can You Travel With Cannabis? Where You Can (And Can’t) Go

Cannabis may be your one-way ticket to zen, but can you bring it when traveling to a more literal destination?

The answer: It depends on where you’re going and how you’re getting there. Here’s our traveler’s guide to going places with cannabis, from when you can pack a stash bag to how you should pack it (and which stash bags to choose).

"How To Travel With Cannabis"

Can you fly with cannabis?

Not unless you’re one of our carrier pigeons. Assuming you don’t have wings, you can’t fly with recreational cannabis, even if you’re flying between two states where recreational cannabis is legal. Recreational cannabis is not allowed on commercial flights — whether in your personal, carry-on, or checked bag — because it’s federally illegal.

There’s one exception to this rule, and it’s limited and vague. In April 2026, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued guidance stating that medical cannabis is allowed in carry-on and checked baggage with “special instructions.” But this guidance doesn’t exactly mean that you can travel with cannabis now.

Nowhere does the TSA clarify or explain what its special instructions entail. The TSA also states that “if any illegal substance…is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.” So, in short, you’re still best off not bringing medical cannabis onto flights. Plus, all cannabis products at The Travel Agency, a licensed New York recreational dispensary, are recreational, not medical.

Can I travel with cannabis within New York?

If you’re not flying, you’re traveling solely within New York, and you’re at least 21 years old, then you can bring cannabis with you wherever you’re going. This is because recreational cannabis is completely legal within NYC and New York State for adults 21 and older.

Importantly, you can’t bring cannabis products that you’ve purchased in the Empire State across state lines. Keep your products within New York State even if recreational cannabis is also legal in the state where you’re heading.

You can transport legally purchased cannabis in your car in New York City if you are 21 or older, provided it is kept in a sealed, unopened container and stored securely out of reach, such as in the trunk. However, if you’re driving on your travels, it’s important to never get behind the wheel while experiencing the effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (the intoxicating cannabinoid in cannabis). Doing so is dangerous and illegal, and it’s also illegal to consume cannabis in any vehicle, both when it’s stationary and in motion. It’s also smart to keep your cannabis products’ packaging sealed and in your glove compartment while in transit, though be sure to take it with you after parking.

What are the cannabis possession limits in New York?

In NYC and New York State, if you’re at least 21 years old, you can legally possess three ounces of cannabis flower outside your home. Inside your home, that limit increases to five pounds of flower (about 27 times more than the out-of-home limit). For concentrated cannabis products such as cannabis vapes, you can possess up to 24 grams inside or outside your home.

Where can I consume cannabis in New York?

You can consume cannabis at home (unless you rent and your landlord prohibits it) both in New York State and NYC. You can also smoke or vape cannabis pretty much anywhere you can smoke or vape tobacco.

Read our guide to where you can consume cannabis for the full list of approved and prohibited locations.

Can I consume cannabis at the beach in New York?

Probably not. Under state law, almost all state and community beaches are a no-go for smoking or vaping cannabis. And if you’re at a federal beach — for example, Jacob Riis Park in Queens is managed by the National Park Service — cannabis consumption of any sort is prohibited too.

All this said, despite the legal risk, NYC cannabis travelers often fly discreetly at the beach with cannabis edibles and other products that, to the uninitiated, pass as everyday items. Pack these beach bag essentials to get ready for takeoff on your own stealthy terms.

How to pack your stash bag for travel

A ready-to-roll stash bag has upright vapes, stays in cannabis-friendly environments, contains only some types of edibles, and is reliably smellproof.

Store vapes upright: Your new all-in-one or favorite vape cart is less likely to leak, spill, or clog when stored upright, such as in a small, zippable inner pocket.

Strive for a dark, dry, cool place: Though not always easy to find during summer travel, cool, dark, dry environments best preserve your products’ potency, flavor, and quality. Storage in an airtight container with a Boveda humidity pack is ideal.

Consider only certain edibles for summer travel: Whether at the beach or in a hot car, cannabis chocolates will melt in the summer heat, and THC gummies may stick to each other. Only capsules and THC drinks maintain their form in summer conditions.

Smellproof your flower and pre-rolls: Even though New York is 420-friendly, discretion always makes for smoother travels. Stash your cannabis pre-rolls and flower in cannabis storage containers to mask their signature odors and keep your ritual on the down-low.
