Unwinding, focusing, just vibing: THC gummies are the ticket for your next getaway. Start your journey with us with a primer on these infused bite-sized delights: What they are, how they work, and how to shop for them in a licensed New York dispensary.

THC gummies are first digested, then passed through the liver. Then, the THC makes its way into your bloodstream and then to the brain.

What are THC gummies?

THC gummies are candies that contain delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol — the famous THC for short. You’ll find sweet, sour, spicy, and even savory varieties at your local licensed dispensary. From classics like strawberry and sour watermelon to savory cinnamon, to gummies with a gourmet flair like yuzu, there’s something pleasing for every palette.

THC gummies come in varying shapes, sizes, and doses. In New York, a package of edibles cannot contain more than 100mg of THC in total. Within that are serving sizes, typically of 5mg or 10mg, although the popularity of smaller “microdoses” is on the rise.

How do THC gummies work?

When you consume THC gummies, the journey begins in your digestive system. The THC is absorbed through the walls of your stomach and intestines and is metabolized through your liver before entering your bloodstream. This is called the first-pass effect, and it directly affects how you experience cannabis.

Here’s where things get interesting: During this process, THC is transformed into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC – a compound known to have a more potent and longer-lasting effect than THC itself. Once 11-hydroxy-THC is formed, it circulates through your bloodstream and eventually crosses the blood-brain barrier, interacting with the cannabinoid receptors in your brain.

How you’ll feel after trying a THC gummy depends on a lot of factors. Your experience with edibles and cannabis in general, your metabolism, what you had to eat that day, and the mindset you’re in all steer the ship and influence your experience.

What about CBD gummies?

CBD gummies, like THC gummies (and all other cannabis gummies for that matter), make their way through your body in precisely the same way as their intoxicating counterparts. The main difference is the cannabinoids they contain. In a dispensary, you’ll find some CBD gummies or gummies with a ratio of CBD to other cannabinoids. But if you find CBD products outside the dispensary, those are derived from industrial hemp. In many cases, those products aren’t produced and tested under the same stringent standards as products sold in a dispensary.

It’s important to note that just as with THC gummies, CBD gummies may have varying levels of bioavailability and onset time. Each person’s body may respond differently, so it’s always advisable to start with a lower dose and gradually increase as you feel is right.

Why do gummies feel stronger than flower?

Gummies hit different. For many, the experience feels much stronger than vaping or enjoying a joint. The reason for that all comes down to how THC is metabolized in your body.

Inhaling THC enters your bloodstream, where it travels directly to your brain. That process takes around 15 minutes and the whole experience lasts for around 2 to 3 hours. But because THC gummies go through your body’s whole digestive system, the effects take longer to have an impact and they last for quite a bit longer.

Remember that 11-hydroxy-THC we talked about earlier? That creates a stronger effect on your body and mind. THC from inhaled or topical forms of cannabis doesn’t convert to 11-hydroxy-THC. The theory is that 11-hydroxy-THC binds more efficiently to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, leading to a pronounced and long-lasting session.
