You’ve probably heard of 4/20, but did you know there’s a holiday dedicated to cannabis concentrates? In this blog, we’ll guide you through the top New York concentrates brands to celebrate with this 7/10. From artisanal craftsmanship to enticing flavors to uplifting potencies, these local favorites are set to elevate your 7/10 experience.

The 7/10 weed holiday's origins are quite mysterious, but one theory traces its roots to the fact that the numerals 710 look like the word "oil" when turned upside-down, as this image demonstrates.

First things first: What is 7/10? Is it a real holiday?

July 10th, also called Oil Day or Dab Day, is an unofficial holiday celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts. This day is centered around all things cannabis oils and dabs, the super potent goodies extracted from cannabis flower. (Many edibles and topicals are made with these extracts, too.) The day was first acknowledged in the early 2000s, decades after 4/20 entered the scene as the main cannabis lover’s holiday.

The origin story of 7/10 is a bit hazy. As the legend goes, the number “710” turned upside-down looks like “OIL” read backward, paying homage to the cannabis extract from which concentrates are made. Other sources claim that its origins come from rapper TaskRok, who released an album on July 10th filled with references to concentrates, including a track called “Boil the Oil.” Yet, others say that it’s connected to the Grateful Dead and their “house,” located at 710 Ashbury Street in San Francisco.

No matter its true origins, the day was first acknowledged in the early 2000s, decades after 4/20 entered the scene as the main cannabis lover’s holiday. But it really took off a little over a decade ago, when an article published in LA Weekly back in 2013 declared 7/10 the new 4/20.

With 7/10 being a relatively new phenomenon, this may be your first time hearing about it. But as more licensed dispensaries open and cannabis is more accessible to more people, interest in 7/10 continues to grow. In fact, many dispensaries now consider July 10th as one of their busiest days, even rivaling 4/20. Dispensaries have taken note: Concentrate sales in U.S. markets increased by 24.1 percent on July 10th, 2021, compared to the prior four weeks that year. Overall, concentrates fueled $2.4 billion in sales in 2022, up from $1.9 billion in 2020.

Celebrate 7/10 by trying one of these four NY concentrate brands

New York City is the heart of cannabis culture in many ways. As the licensed market gains ground here, the Empire State is becoming a hub for innovative, high-quality concentrates. If you want to make the most out of 7/10, why not celebrate by trying a New York-born-and-bred concentrates brand?

MFNY

Marijuana Farms New York (MFNY) is a standout cannabis brand rooted in the heart of New York’s Hudson Valley. The brand upholds meticulous breeding, selection, and cultivation practices, resulting in trichome and terpene-rich plants that make for great concentrates, and especially for live rosin.

Hudson Cannabis

Based in the Hudson Valley, Hudson Cannabis specializes in sustainable cultivation practices. The brand’s concentrates are made from regeneratively-grown cannabis, which focuses on best practices designed to minimize and even potentially reverse the effects of climate change.

Nightshade

Nightshade concentrates are crafted by Nightshade Farm, an Albany County-based brand operating from a 41-acre farm in New York. Their Hella Jelly Concentrates, referred to as “Nug Run,” deliver a full spectrum badder known for its potency and rich terpene content.

Blotter

Blotter is a New York-based concentrates brand inspired by underground psychedelia. You’ll find strain-specific live resin from this brand on The Travel Agency’s menu.

House of Sacci

Among the first of New York’s licensed cannabis brands, House of Sacci offers concentrates and flower sourced from cannabis grown in its 40,000-square-foot indoor greenhouse. House of Sacci’s kief can be added to flower or consumed on its own.

Jetty Extracts

While not a New York-based brand, Jetty Extracts has a reputation for quality that extends from coast to coast. Originating from California and with a presence in Colorado, Jetty Extracts is now available in the Empire State through licensed retailers like The Travel Agency. The Dablicator filled with oil is designed for easy application with your favorite consumption method.

What about vapes? Are vapes concentrates?

While you may not need a dab rig to enjoy them on Dab Day, vapes are very much a concentrate, too. Cannabis vape carts are pre-filled with concentrate of all kinds — strain-specific live resin carts, THC distillate vapes, and concentrate with cannabis terpenes added back in are all in the mix at The Travel Agency.

If you’re all about ease and discretion, vape carts are a great choice for 7/10. All you need is a 510-thread battery that fits most standard carts — and in the case of disposable vapes, you won’t even need that. The whole setup fits in your bag or your pocket (with care), no dab rigs or blowtorches are necessary. No wonder they’re one of the most popular cannabis products out there.

What you’ll need to enjoy on 7/10

Don’t leave the dispensary without the accessories you need to enjoy Dab Day. Talk to a budtender about your options for dabbing, including:

Dab rig: The classic. This glass (or sometimes silicone) pipe is designed to instantly vaporize concentrates. To use a dab rig, use a blowtorch to heat the pipe’s “nail” or “banger” until it’s red hot. Drop a tiny amount of concentrate onto the nail. (You can cover the concentrate with a carb cap, but this is optional.) Raise the mouthpiece to your lips and enjoy.

Dab tool: Concentrates can be sticky, runny, or generally quite small to work with – not to mention, it’s not safe to put your fingers close to a hot nail or banger. A dab tool can (and should) be used to scoop and apply concentrate in your dab rig or vaporizer chamber.

Dab mat: If you’re using a dab rig, grab a dab mat that protects your furniture from the hot nail and blowtorch.

Vaporizer: Select stationary and portable vaporizers, like the PAX Plus, can be used with both flower and concentrates with the right settings and parts. With these devices, there’s no need for a whole dab rig setup. A battery heats up a compartment into which you drop your dab.

Dab pen: Skip the rig with a dab pen, a skinny device used solely for concentrates. One end has a mouthpiece, while the other has an atomizer heated by a battery inside the device. Pop your dab onto the atomizer, and you’ll be on your way.

How The Travel Agency Celebrates 7/10
